A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 9

       I.            LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
1.      Recall simplifying radical expressions.
2.      Add radical expressions.
3.      Relate the topic in real-life situations.

    II.            LEARNING CONTENT
A.    Topic: Addition of Radical Expressions
B.    Instructional Materials: laptop, TV, manila papers, markers, chalk, chalkboard
C.    References: Hands-On, Minds-On Activities in Mathematics II by Dionio, Janet D., et. al, pp. 165-168

 III.            LEARNING PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity
Student’s Activity
A.    DAILY ROUTINE
1.      Prayer

2.      Greetings
Good afternoon, class.

3.      Classroom Management
Before you take your seat, kindly check the alignment of your chairs and pick up the messes under it.

4.      Checking of Attendance
Who is the secretary of the class? Kindly submit to me the list of the absentees for today before I leave the room.

B.     PRIMING
1.      Motivation
Before we start our lesson for today, let’s first sing a song. The song is in the tune of “You Belong With Me.”

2.      Video Presentation
I have here a video about our topic for today. Study and analyse the content of the video together with its examples given. Remember to note important details from the video. After that, we will have an activity.

Is that clear?

C.     ACTIVITY
Let’s have an activity.
The class will be divided into 4 groups. Your group will be based on your birth month. Those who have their birthdays on January, February and March will be the group 1, April, May and June will be the group 2, July, August and September will be the group 3 and October, November and December will be the group 4. Each group will receive an envelope containing the materials you will use and the task that you are going to do. You are only given 5 minutes to finish your activity.

Are my instructions clear?

Before you proceed to your respective groups, please be guided by the word “RADICAL”.

And be guided by the following set of criteria.

Directions: Simplify the given radical expressions. Box your final answer.

Examples:
·
·

1.
2.
3.
4.

D.    ANALYSIS
1.      How did you answer the given activity?

2.      How do you think the given expressions were simplified?
·         The expressions were simplified by adding the radicals.

3.      Based on the activity, how do we add radicals?
·         Similar Radicals are radicals with the same order or index and the same radicand.
·         Dissimilar Radicals are radicals of different indices and different radicands. These radicals cannot be added.
Example:
a.   =
b.

c.

d.

E.     ABSTRACTION
To sum up:

How do we add similar radicals?

How about radicals with different radicands?

F.      APPLICATION
Now that you already know how to add radicals, I have here a quotation. Kindly read altogether.

What insights can you give based on the quotation? Who can relate it to our topic for today?

We all know that knowledge is power as power increases with knowledge. We can acquire these knowledge through personal experiences. If we have acquired knowledge, we also have the power to solve different problems easily. In relation to our topic for today, in addition of radical expressions, If you have the knowledge of simplifying radicals and other concepts that are needed, you can easily apply it and add radical expressions.

Heavenly Father,
You hold each of us in your loving hands.
Come fill our hearts, minds and bodies afresh with hope.
Help us to cast our worries upon you, so that we can embrace our learning today.
Bless us as we study and grow together.
Come and anoint those who teach and tutor us to be bringers of insight and knowledge.
Lord, watch over us all, keep us safe within your Almighty hand.
Amen.

Good afternoon, Ma’am.

Yes, Ma’am.

Tune: You Belong With Me
       I.            You’re in the room with your teacher she’s asking
She’s telling off about something you should know
‘Cause she doesn’t get your humor like I do

II.            I’m in the room, it’s a typical Wednesday right
I’m listening to the kind of lesson you doesn’t like
And she’ll never know your story like I do

Refrain
But she knows index
I know radicals
She simplify it and add on the similar
Dreaming about the way when you make up and find
That what you’re solving for has been here the whole time

Chorus
If you could add the radicals
I understand you
Been here all along
So why can’t you see
You can add with me
You can add with me.

Yes, Ma’am.

Yes, Ma’am.
